UNIFEM focuses its activities on four strategic areas: reducing feminized poverty, ending violence against women, reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS among women and girls and achieving gender equality in democratic governance in times of peace as well as war. Find out more
To pursue these goals UNIFEM works with countries to formulate laws and policies which eliminate gender discrimination and promote gender equality in areas such as land and inheritance rights, decent work for women and ending violence against women. It also aims to transform institutions to make them more accountable regarding gender equality, to strengthen the voice of women’s rights advocates, and to change harmful and discriminatory practices in society.
UNIFEM has programmes and projects in Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Arab States, Asia-Pacific, Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Find out more
