Significance of the House Name

Karenga was the wife of Te Matapihi-o-Rehua a chief of Ngati Whakaue, and grandson of Pukaki.

Ngati Karenga is a small hapu based around the marae at Te Koutu. Tumahaurangi is the name of the meeting house and Karenga the dining room.
